Living in Fennimore, WI: Where Highways 18 and 61 Meet

August 04, 2026

Fennimore is the crossroads. US 18 runs east-west from Prairie du Chien toward Madison, US 61 runs north-south from Boscobel toward Lancaster and Dubuque, and they meet in the middle of this town of about 2,800 people. If you've driven anywhere in southwest Wisconsin, you've been through Fennimore, probably stopped for gas, and maybe wondered what it's like to actually live here. I'm Jeremy Fishnick, a Realtor and home inspector based 11 miles south in Lancaster, and I can tell you.

Short answer: Fennimore is a small Grant County town built around the Highway 18/61 junction and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. It's affordable, centrally located for anyone working in multiple towns, and quieter than its highway traffic suggests once you're a block off the main drag.

The basics

The 2020 census counted 2,764 people. The town sits high on the ridge at nearly 1,200 feet of elevation, which means great views and the first snow in the county. US 18 and US 61 run together through downtown as the main commercial strip, so businesses here get traffic from every direction. Fennimore incorporated as a village in 1889 and a city in 1919, and the name comes from an early settler who disappeared during the Black Hawk War.

The single biggest institution in town is Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, usually just called Southwest Tech. Its main campus is here, and it draws students and staff from across the region. Beyond the college, Fennimore's economy is agriculture, small manufacturing, the school district, and the gas stations, restaurants, and services that cater to highway traffic.

What daily life is like

Fennimore has a compact, functional downtown: a grocery store, a hardware store, restaurants, bars, a bank, and the kind of businesses you need weekly. Lancaster is 11 miles south for the hospital and county offices, Platteville is a short drive for big-box shopping, Boscobel is north for the river, and Prairie du Chien is west. You're never more than 20 to 30 minutes from any of them, which is exactly why some people who work in two or three of these towns choose Fennimore as home base.

It's a quiet town with a rhythm that follows the school calendar and the farm seasons. Southwest Tech brings a little daytime bustle and a steady stream of adult learners. Evenings and weekends are calm.

Who moves to Fennimore

  • Southwest Tech faculty, staff, and students who want to walk or make a two-minute drive to campus.
  • People with jobs spread across the county, such as traveling nurses, ag salespeople, and tradespeople who work everywhere from Boscobel to Platteville.
  • Dubuque commuters on a budget who are willing to trade a longer drive for a lower house payment than Platteville or Cuba City.
  • Farm families from the surrounding townships moving into town.
  • First-time buyers who want a detached house with a yard and can't find one at their price in the bigger towns.

Housing stock: what you'll actually find

Older homes on the grid

The core of Fennimore is 1890s-1940s housing, with the two-story farmhouse-style homes and bungalows typical of Grant County. Entry prices are among the lowest in the county. As an inspector, I see the same age-related items I see everywhere: older wiring, stone foundations, aging plumbing. Because it's a ridge-top town, basements tend to be drier than in the river towns, which is a quiet advantage.

Mid-century ranches

There's a solid stock of 1960s-80s ranches with basements and garages. These are the homes most working families end up in and they sell well when priced correctly.

Newer construction

Fennimore has a limited number of newer homes on the outskirts. New construction is possible, and lot prices are reasonable, but don't expect a wide selection of recently built homes on the market at any given time.

Acreage

The townships around Fennimore are serious farm country. Small acreage properties with a house and outbuildings come up periodically and draw hobby farmers and people who want a shop. Budget for well and septic inspections; I cover the details in my rural property guide.

Across the board, Fennimore is one of the most affordable towns in my market. If you've been shopping in Platteville and feeling squeezed, this is often where I suggest looking next.

Schools

The Fennimore Community School District runs K-12 in town. It's a small district with the small-class, everyone-knows-everyone character that families in this area tend to want. The standout advantage for Fennimore is Southwest Tech right in town: high school students can take dual-credit courses, graduates can earn a two-year degree or trade certificate without leaving home, and adults can retrain for a new career on their lunch break. Few towns this size have that.

Parks and recreation

Fennimore has city parks, ballfields, and a pool, and the Southwest Tech campus adds athletic facilities and events. The Fennimore Railroad Historical Society runs a museum downtown with a narrow-gauge train, and the Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum is a quirky local stop that visitors seek out. For bigger recreation, the Wisconsin River is a short drive north, the Mississippi is a half hour west, and the area's trout streams, trails, and public hunting lands are all within easy reach.

Things locals know

  • Highway noise is real on 18/61 and the blocks right next to it. Go two blocks off the highway and it disappears. Visit a house at rush hour before you buy.
  • The ridge means wind and drifting snow. Fennimore often gets weather before Lancaster or Platteville does.
  • Semi trucks use this junction constantly, so the gas stations and restaurants stay open later than you'd expect for a town this size.
  • The Southwest Tech campus is an underused community resource: events, continuing education, and facilities most residents forget are there.

Who Fennimore is not for

If you want to live without a car, Fennimore isn't it; every major service beyond the basics is in another town. If highway traffic bothers you and you can only afford the homes near the main drag, look elsewhere. If you want a Dubuque commute under 30 minutes, Cuba City or Platteville makes more sense. And if you want nightlife or a dining scene, you'll be driving to Platteville or Dubuque for it.

For someone who works in several towns, wants a low house payment, or wants to live where they can go to Southwest Tech from home, Fennimore is a smart, often overlooked choice.
