Driftless Area Wisconsin towns

Moving to the Driftless Area? A Local's Guide to Lancaster, Platteville, Cuba City, Boscobel, and Dodgeville

October 18, 2026

The Driftless Area is the corner of Wisconsin the glaciers skipped, which is why it looks nothing like the flat farmland people picture when they hear "Wisconsin." It is bluffs, river valleys, trout streams, and small towns that each have their own personality. I grew my businesses here, I inspect and sell homes across all of these communities, and buyers relocating from Madison, Dubuque, or out of state ask me the same question: which town is right for us? Here is the honest, short version.

Lancaster

The Grant County seat and my home base. Lancaster has a classic courthouse square, a hospital, solid city services, and a housing mix that runs from early-1900s homes near downtown to newer subdivisions on the edge of town. It is a practical choice for families and for anyone who wants a real town with a short drive to Platteville, Dubuque, or Prairie du Chien. Prices tend to be reasonable relative to Platteville, and lots are often larger.

Platteville

Home to UW-Platteville, which gives it the biggest population, the most restaurants, and the most rental activity of the five. Housing near campus moves fast and attracts investors. Families often look to the newer neighborhoods on the north and west sides or just outside city limits. If you want amenities and energy, Platteville is the pick; if you want quiet, look at the surrounding townships.

Cuba City

"The City of Presidents" sits on the Grant-Lafayette county line about 15 minutes from Dubuque, which makes it a popular choice for people who work in Iowa but want Wisconsin small-town life and schools. It is tight-knit, affordable, and the kind of place where the main street still matters. Inventory is limited, so buyers here need to be ready to move when the right house lists.

Boscobel

On the Wisconsin River at the edge of the hill country, Boscobel is the outdoors option: hunting, fishing, kayaking, and quick access to the Lower Wisconsin Riverway. Housing is among the most affordable in the region, and rural properties with acreage are easier to find here than closer to Platteville. It is a longer drive to larger employers, which keeps prices down and the pace slow.

Dodgeville

The Iowa County seat and the closest of the five to Madison, which shows up in both the commuter traffic and the prices. Dodgeville has Governor Dodge State Park on its doorstep, a strong downtown, and a healthy mix of housing. If you need to be in Madison a couple of days a week but want to live in the hills, this is usually where the search starts.

What relocating buyers should know

  • Inventory is thin and seasonal. Spring and early summer bring the most listings. Winter buyers face less competition but fewer choices.
  • Rural properties need extra diligence. Wells, septic systems, outbuildings, and road access all deserve attention. As an inspector, I build that into every rural showing.
  • Financing programs matter here. USDA loans are available in most of these communities, and they can change what a buyer can afford.
  • Off-market opportunities exist. In towns this size, a lot of homes change hands before they ever hit the MLS. My Perfect Home Finder program is built to surface those.
