Living in Cuba City, WI: Small Town, Dubuque Paycheck

June 04, 2026

Drive down Main Street in Cuba City and you'll pass a banner for every U.S. president, one after another, hanging from the light poles. That's why it's called the "City of Presidents." Keep driving south on Highway 80 for about 18 minutes and you're in Dubuque, Iowa, which is the real reason a lot of people live here. I'm Jeremy Fishnick, a Realtor and home inspector in Grant County, and Cuba City is one of the towns I work in most because the math is so simple: small-town house, Dubuque paycheck.

Short answer: Cuba City is a town of about 2,100 people on the Grant-Lafayette county line, roughly 18 minutes from Dubuque and 10 from Platteville, with one of the highest-rated small school districts in the state. It's where you move when you want your kids in a small school and your commute under 20 minutes.

The basics

The 2020 census counted 2,138 residents. Most of the city is in Grant County, with a small slice across the line in Lafayette County, which occasionally matters for property taxes and which county office you deal with. Highway 80 is the main artery, running north to Platteville and south to Dubuque. The city's own community profile lists the drive to Platteville at about 10 minutes and Dubuque at about 18.

The largest in-town employer most people mention is AY McDonald's plastic molding plant, which has expanded several times. Beyond that, the honest answer is that Cuba City is a bedroom community. People work in Dubuque, Platteville, and the surrounding farms and small shops, and come home to Cuba City to sleep, coach Little League, and mow the lawn.

What daily life is like

This is a town where the school is the center of gravity. Cuba City's elementary and middle schools are housed in the "Round School," a circular building that out-of-towners find odd and locals find normal. The high school won a National Blue Ribbon award in 2007, and the district's state report card has put it in the top tier. The girls' basketball program has won more WIAA state titles than any other program since 1976, and the gym is packed in the winter. If you don't care about high school sports, you'll still end up at a game because your neighbors are there.

Day to day, you've got a grocery store, a few restaurants and bars, a bank, gas stations, and the essentials. For anything more, you're in Platteville in 10 minutes or Dubuque in 18. That's close enough that most residents don't feel like they're missing anything.

Who moves to Cuba City

  • Dubuque workers at the hospitals, John Deere, the insurance companies, and the colleges who want a Wisconsin address and a lower house payment.
  • Young families specifically choosing the school district. I hear "we want our kids at Cuba City" more than almost any other school-driven request in the county.
  • UW-Platteville employees who want to live outside the college-town bubble.
  • Farm families from the surrounding townships moving into town when it's time to give up the acreage.

Housing stock: what you'll actually find

Older homes on the grid

The historic core has late-1800s and early-1900s homes, including some handsome two-stories with the kind of woodwork you can't buy anymore. As an inspector I see the usual age-related items: older electrical that has been partially upgraded, stone foundations, aging plumbing. The good news is many have been well cared for because this is a town of long-term owners rather than flippers.

Mid-century ranches

The ranches from the 1960s through the 1980s are the bread and butter. One level, basement, garage, decent lot. These are what most Dubuque-commuting families end up buying, and they don't sit long when they're priced right.

Newer homes

There are newer neighborhoods on the edges of town with 1990s-2000s and some recent builds. Inventory is thin. When a well-kept newer ranch comes up, the buyer pool includes people from Dubuque, Platteville, and the whole south end of the county, so expect competition.

Country properties

The townships around Cuba City are dairy and crop country, and small acreage with a house and outbuildings comes up a few times a year. Those draw serious interest from hobby farmers and people who want horses or a big shop. If that's your plan, budget for a well and septic inspection; I cover what matters in this rural property guide.

Cuba City prices generally sit between Lancaster and Platteville. The Dubuque proximity props up values more than you'd expect for a town this size. If you're on the other side of the transaction, I've written about selling a home in Cuba City separately.

Schools

I've already covered the Cuba City public schools above; they're the headline reason people choose this town. There's also St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in town and Immaculate Conception in nearby Kieler for families who want parochial education. For college, UW-Platteville is 10 minutes away and Southwest Tech in Fennimore is a reasonable drive. Plenty of Cuba City kids commute to both from home.

Parks and recreation

The city has parks, ballfields, and a pool, and the school facilities get heavy community use. For bigger outdoor recreation you're close to the Mississippi River at Dubuque and Potosi, the Platte River, and the rolling Driftless countryside that makes for great cycling and motorcycling. Dubuque's riverfront, museums, and events are an easy evening trip.

Things locals know

  • The presidential banners get updated after every inauguration, and it's a small ceremony of its own.
  • Living in Wisconsin and working in Iowa means filing in two states. It's routine for thousands of people in this corner, but talk to a tax preparer before you assume anything.
  • Highway 80 is a good road, but it's two lanes and it gets farm equipment in spring and fall. Build a few minutes into the commute.
  • The county line matters. Confirm which county a property sits in before you compare tax bills.

Who Cuba City is not for

If you want restaurants, nightlife, or a walkable downtown with shops, Cuba City is a few minutes from those things but doesn't have them itself. If you want a big new house with lots of options to choose from, inventory will frustrate you. If you'd rather not be known by name at the gas station within a month, pick a bigger town. And if you don't have a car-based life, it won't work; this town is built around driving to Platteville or Dubuque.

For a family that wants a highly regarded small school, a tight community, and a sub-20-minute drive to a Dubuque job, Cuba City is hard to beat. See how it stacks up against the neighboring towns in my Driftless Area town guide.
